How can you work with local libraries to transform them into hubs of creativity, movement, and shared wonder?
Since 2014, Upswing has been collaborating with libraries across the UK to create engaging experiences that blend contemporary circus with community spaces. Our goal is to attract new visitors, encourage creativity, and strengthen local connections through unexpected artistic encounters.
We like to go beyond just performances. We work closely with library staff to develop programmes that resonate with their communities. These collaborations have resulted in acrobatic shows surrounded by book stacks, interactive workshops for families and children, and creative activities that highlight the library’s resources in new ways.

Through our work, we’ve seen how bringing art into libraries can have a positive impact. New visitors and energy are invited into the space, children discover new ways to engage with stories, families share unforgettable, accessible experiences, and libraries become lively centres of activity and learning.
“Through our partnership with Upswing we are extending the understanding of what a library can be. A safe, welcoming, creative space. A space for learning and growth – all beyond just reading.” – Sarah Smith, Development Manager, Brent Libraries
We’ve gathered our experiences, insights, and practical advice into a comprehensive guide. This resource is designed for both libraries interested in hosting unique events and artists looking to work in community spaces.
Our guide covers:
