Common Ground

“LET’S TELL IT LIKE IT IS, AND HOW IT COULD BE, HOW IT WAS, AND OF COURSE, HOW IT SHOULD BE” – SALT ’N’ PEPA

Common Ground is a new circus theatre project that combines the thrill and the risk-taking of contemporary circus with irreverent humour. This new work focuses on the complexity of identity, the difficulty we have talking about race and why it can be so hard to find common ground.

A man balances on another man's shoulders.

A full-length piece for indoor venues and theatre/spaces – Common Ground is bringing together the stellar talents of a dynamic creative team led by Upswing’s Artistic Director, Vicki Dela Amedume, rising comedy star Athena Kugblenu, London-based music maker Afrikan Boy, and filmmaker Dan Martin – creating an ambitious and daring mash-up of contemporary circus, spoken word, UK Hip Hop, Grime and Afrobeat.

All these talents will come together to dig into themes of appropriation, assimilation and the illusiveness of authenticity – to ask the questions we choose to avoid whilst creating a funny and uplifting experience, that shifts between art and entertainment.

We are currently in development working with Bernie Grant Arts Centre and Brixton House Theatre for a new live work to premiere in 2023-24.
