Why Our Bernie Grant Partnership Matters

Bernie Grant Arts Centre – where SHOWDOWN is showing from today – has had to make some tough decisions recently. Like many arts venues across the UK, they’re facing some challenges and have decided to pause most of their programming while they work to secure their future. However, they’re still honouring existing programming that aligns with their mission, and we’re proud that Showdown is one of them.

We’re so pleased to be returning to the centre. Not only because it’s where Showdown had its R&D years ago, but because they share our commitment to platforming diverse voices and creating work that reflects our communities.

Our cast and creatives worked with local group the Reggae Choir during the R&D process for Showdown and mockumentary prequel Common Ground at Bernie Grant Arts Centre in 2022.

When we first started developing Showdown, we needed a creative home that understood the complexities of what we were trying to achieve – a circus show that interrogates competition, identity, and power dynamics through spectacular aerial work and sharp comedy.

Bernie Grant provided that space, both literally and figuratively.

During those early R&D sessions in their studios, we workshopped the format, tested material with audiences, and refined the show’s unique blend of entertainment and social commentary.

Over the past 17 years, Bernie Grant has created a platform for radical storytelling and community connection; supporting countless artists, amplifying voices that often go unheard, and providing a home for work that challenges, provokes, and inspires. They’ve consistently programmed work that reflects the experiences and stories of their diverse community.

This commitment to authentic representation is exactly why Showdown feels so at home there. Our show examines the games we play around diversity and representation, questioning what people are willing to sacrifice to succeed in systems that weren’t built for them. It’s work that requires a venue brave enough to engage with complex themes while delivering spectacular entertainment.

As they go through this tough period, every ticket you buy goes towards supporting a venue that’s consistently championed authentic voices over easy wins. Which is kind of perfect, given the themes of the show.

Let’s fill those seats! Showdown runs May 29-31 at Bernie Grant Arts Centre.
