Call out for performers

Upswing, an award-winning contemporary circus company, is looking for three brilliant performers for an extended R&D for a new creation.

About the project

Falling together is a new circus theatre project combining circus and stand-up comedy to explore the politics of power and the complexity of identity.

A group of diverse young people vogue for the camera

It has been conceived by Circus Director Vicki Dela Amedume and Stand-up comedian and writer Athena Kugblenu. We are looking for a cast of three performers to work with us, and film maker Dan Martin, to develop a script framework and structure for the show.

We are looking for artists who are available for this development period (see dates below) but also interested in developing a longer-term relationship with Upswing and the work, to tour in the full production in 2023.

The show will draw from wider research and conversations but also the experiences of the artists and creatives involved, so we are particularly seeking artists who identify as Black or from a Global Majority background. All the roles are for people of any gender identity.

Thematically this work will tread challenging territory around the way we talk about race, ethnicity and gender.  We will put in place structures to support all creatives to navigate the creation process safely. Ultimately our aspiration is to make a piece of work that holds themes with respect but also has a lightness of touch.

We are seeking:

Two physical performers with a high level in at least one of the dance styles or physical disciplines listed below and are keen to explore working with text:

  • Tumbling / Tricking / Floor based acrobatics / Acro-dance
  • A street dance style like – Breaking, House dance, Flexing, Krump, Popping etc
  • Handstands
  • Duo/group acrobatics
  • Juggling and manipulation
  • Any static aerial discipline (silks, trapeze, straps, flying pole)
  • Chinese pole
  • Pole dance

One highly physical performer with a strong acting ability and proficient with text, who is also skilled in at least one of the dance styles or physical disciplines listed below:

  • Tumbling / Tricking / Floor based acrobatics / Acro-dance
  • A street dance style like – Breaking, House dance, Flexing, Krump, Popping etc
  • Handstands
  • Duo/group acrobatics
  • Juggling and manipulation
  • Any static aerial discipline (silks, trapeze, straps, flying pole)
  • Chinese pole
  • Pole dance

Upswing productions are ensemble pieces where all artists contribute to making the production collaboratively. We are therefore seeking performers who not only have strong skills, but also have a playful streak and an interest in devising and discovery.

We want to work with performers who are happy to experiment and muck in where needed; a team working approach is vital. We value the people that we work with and aim to create a challenging yet fun working environment.
